Seeking Candidates for Open Positions on the Simone de Beauvoir Studies Editorial Team!

Since its relaunch in 2019, Simone de Beauvoir Studies (SdBS) has established itself as a prominent publication venue in the field of Beauvoir studies. After accomplishing outstanding work that led the journal to be awarded the 2021 Council of Editors of Learned Journal’s Phoenix Award for Significant Editorial and Design Achievement, the current Editorial Team is preparing to move on to new challenges. SdBS are thus seeking candidates for a number of positions on the journal’s new Editorial Team. Candidates should send a CV and a brief statement of interest and qualifications to the next Editor in Chief, Claudia Bouliane ([email protected]) by October 15, 2023.

Assistant Editor: The Assistant Editor assists the Editor in Chief with tasks that are crucial to ensuring the success of the journal. These include coordinating peer review for submitted articles and requesting copyright permissions, managing the journal’s indexing and abstracting, working to increase the impact factor and competitiveness of the journal, and overseeing the subscription marketing and publicity for the journal in consultation with the Editor in Chief. As a member of the SdBS Editorial Team, the Assistant Editor is expected to attend monthly Team meetings and to participate in discussions with the journal’s Advisory Board as they arise.

Managing Editor: The Managing Editor oversees the copyediting and production process for SdBS once articles are selected for publication after peer review. This task involves working closely with the production editor and copyeditor assigned to SdBS at Brill, the journal’s publisher. As a member of the SdBS Editorial Team, the Managing Editor is expected to attend monthly Team meetings and to participate in discussions with the journal’s Advisory Board as they arise.

Book Review Editor: The Book Review Editor is responsible for the Book Review feature of the journal. Duties include selecting suitable books for review, soliciting reviews, editing reviews, and overseeing the production process for reviews. Decisions about the Book Review feature should be made in consultation with the Editor in Chief. As a member of the SdBS Editorial Team, the Managing Editor is expected to attend monthly Team meetings and to participate in discussions with the journal’s Advisory Board as they arise.

Each of these positions will begin on January 1, 2024 and the term length is 5 years. Candidates for SdBS Editorial Team positions will ideally be junior or mid-career scholars who have an advanced degree, or those that hold an equivalent status in the professional world, although all applications will be considered. Facility with both English and French languages is desirable though not necessarily required, as is a publication record that includes one or more publications on Simone de Beauvoir. SdBS is especially interested in establishing a new Editorial Team that is diverse in regard to the disciplinary training and geographical and social locations of its members. Candidates may apply for more than one position, but can only serve in one if selected.

Simone de Beauvoir Studies (SdBS) is published by Brill on behalf of the International Simone de Beauvoir Society, and will be housed in the French Department at University of Ottawa under the direction of Professor Claudia Bouliane. For more information, see www.brill.com/sdbs.
